Harris Hill are recruiting on behalf of a small independent boys’ senior school in South London (Borough of Croydon) for a brilliant teacher of History to join their humanities department. The successful candidate will spend the majority of their time teaching history but a willingness to offer Classical Civilisation at pre-GCSE level would be an advantage. The role may suit an NQT or a more experienced teacher with an interest in teaching a broad sweep of history to boys in Years 7 to 9, though there is scope for teaching to A Level. We offer a competitive salary and excellent work environment.

Teacher of History

The Post This position has arisen from an internal review of our curriculum which identified the need to increase the number of periods of History taught in the Lower School (Years 7 to 9) so as to help build up a stronger foundation of enabling knowledge before the start of formal GCSE work in Year 10. We follow a chronological approach to teaching history and we aim to ensure that all pupils have a grasp of key events from the ancient world up to the end of the early modern period by the end of Year 9.

The School

Working here will offer the right candidate excellent opportunities for career development and creativity. We take professional development seriously and we strive to support every teacher to become the best that they can be. We promote a knowledge-rich curriculum and place a high priority on creating the conditions within which teachers can share their passion and expertise with our pupils. Exam results have been good so far and we expect them to improve even further over the next three years. The school has a varied co-curriculum to which most teachers contribute. Sport is strong and we have an excellent record in its three main competitive sports of rugby, football and cricket. We are the only school in the UK to have a formal link with Real Madrid Football Club and we have links with other schools in every continent. School music is developing rapidly, and debating is increasingly popular; indeed, we hosted the London Regional Final of the ESU National Debating Competition in 2018 and now take part in the Oxford Union competition. Seminars and music recitals take place at school every week.

Ethos & History

The School has a Catholic ethos and places strong emphasis on helping its students to acquire virtues such as self-discipline, a sense of responsibility and a spirit of generous service. Pupils are given opportunities to be of service to others in the community. The school was founded in 2013 and there are currently 195 boys on roll from Years 7 to 13. Our school is becoming an increasingly popular choice, attracting boys from a large geographical area - including parts of north London - and growth has been rapid. We are situated in an attractive parkland setting with generous playing fields at the rear. Most teaching takes place within a fine Georgian listed building but other buildings on site have also been developed and the school is in discussion with planning authorities with a view to further expansion of the school site by 2021. Lloyd Park tram stop is close by and there is a frequent tram service from there to East Croydon Station.
