Head of Physics

HEAD OF PHYSICS

FROM JANUARY 2020

We are seeking to appoint a dynamic and inspiring Head of Physics to join an exciting and well-resourced department at an all-boys senior school in Central London. The successful candidate will be enthusiastic about contributing to the department and preparing the boys to study at leading universities in the UK and abroad. A willingness to play a part in the co-curricular programme and to be a pastoral tutor would be an advantage.

Job Description

There are currently 270 boys between the ages of 11 and 17 on roll, spanning Year 7 to Year 12. We have also opened our new Sixth Form Centre with purpose-built facilities for the boys.

We seek to employ highly professional teachers with the ability and commitment to enhance the life of this School and to work effectively and collaboratively with all members of the School community to further establish and develop the School. Our emphasis on educating the whole boy means that all members of staff, in due course, will be expected to contribute to the pastoral care of a group of students as a Tutor as well as contributing to the School’s co-curricular activities.

Physics

The Physics Department is currently made up of two subject specialists, with a third teacher joining in September. We follow the Exploring Science course for Years 7 and 8 and start the Edexcel IGCSE Physics course in the second term of Year 9. Our first A-level cohort will begin Year 13 in September.

Physics is a popular A Level, with ¼ of Year 12 taking it. The boys currently follow the OCR (B) specification.

Our aim as a department is to provide exciting and interactive lessons where the boys can learn hands-on in the classroom. We have a full programme of Physics trips and workshops including visits to CERN and the GCSE Science in Action lectures, as well as the British Physics Olympiad in both Year 11 and at Sixth Form.

The post represents an exciting opportunity for a teacher with the necessary vision and ambition to help the School offer a first-rate academic education for boys. As Head of Physics at you will have the opportunity to build your experience of working with a team of specialists and to develop the teaching of Physics in interesting and innovative ways. The post would suit a talented leader looking to develop their career and who would like the freedom and challenge of working in a newly-established school, or a teacher for whom this would be their first Head of Department role. Teaching staff have experience of both the maintained and independent sectors, and colleagues looking to move into independent education are warmly encouraged to apply.

The Science Department

The Science Department is made up of eight specialists who have a breadth of experience teaching in and leading departments at some of the country’s top independent schools. The Department occupies the top two floors of our Marylebone Lane site, with six laboratories and two prep rooms. An ambitious expansion programme will see a further three laboratories and a dedicated chemical store being built over the summer.

Boys in Years 7-9 have 4.5 hours of science per week, and at GCSE they have 6 hours per week. Boys are taught by subject specialists in our well-equipped labs, with a strong emphasis on practical work to support the academic challenge of the course. The science teachers draw on their experience at previous schools to provide the boys with an absolutely first rate experience in the classroom.

The Department benefits from interactive boards in all labs, three sets of iPads, as well as a wealth of experimental kit with which the boys learn science in a hands-on and exciting way.
