Job description

Harris Hill are seeking to appoint a well-qualified, highly motivated and inspirational member of staff for September 2019 to a co-educational all-through through on the boarders of Sussex.

This is an opportunity for a talented and ambitious candidate to make a significant impact on all aspects of teaching and learning in one of the College's leading departments. It may particularly suit a candidate looking to gain experience in leading their own department in preparation for moving on to a Head of Science position in due course. We are seeking to appoint a brilliant honours graduate in an appropriate discipline to lead the Chemistry Department, teaching Chemistry throughout the school. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the wider life of the Science Department as well as to the College's co-curricular programme.

Degree-level education in a relevant discipline with appropriate post-graduate
professional qualifications and experience in schools.
A good team player with the ability to lead and work with a small team but also to
work independently.
To have the personality, enthusiasm and gravitas to be an outstanding ambassador for
the College.
Organisation, discretion, flexibility and attention to detail.

Excellent skills in oral and written communication.
Ability to form strong working relationships with pupils, colleagues and parents.
Willingness to contribute to the co-curricular life of the College.
Confident proficiency with using Microsoft Excel. Training will be given on the
College's Management Information System (PASS).

Departmental Aims
The Department aims to present its pupils with a stimulating learning experience in which they are encouraged to develop their knowledge and understanding of the subject. We encourage boys and girls equally in their pursuit of Chemistry and aim to develop our pupils' understanding of the scientific basis and breadth of knowledge embraced by the subject and its economic, ethical and social implications. We encourage our pupils both to think logically and to analyse and evaluate data and to read widely and to take responsibility for their own learning and so to fulfil their potential in the subject.

Staff and Facilities
The Chemistry Department comprises four well-qualified and enthusiastic teachers, supported by a technician who services practical requirements and maintains stocks of chemicals. The Department is well stocked with the current student texts while the College Library has an extensive stock of texts for reference and extended reading. The Department occupies laboratories on the ground floor of the Science Block and has benefited from an ongoing programme of refurbishment. All laboratories are equipped with interactive whiteboard facilities. The Department is well resourced, particularly for the teaching of practical Chemistry.
